Box Stitching Wire Problems, Box Stitchers

When the machine is initially setup with a new spool of box stitching wire the brake system does not take much pressure to prevent the spool from over rotating because of the weight of the wire. As the wire gets further to the bottom of the spool it gets easier and easier for the spool to over rotate causing a nesting of the wire or jam. The spool holder brake should be adjusted as the wire comes off to stop this problem.

As you can see in your picture windings of the wire are no longer in line (one after another) like they would be normally during the spooling process.

This is what points us to the over rotation theory. The wire nested initially and when the wire kept on feeding into the machine the jam or snag happened from wires getting tightened upon one another.

WCJ Pilgrim Wire has purchased Stanley Bostitch's wire business, encompassing box stitching, bookbinding stitching and thredlok wire. The companies had been working in conjunction on different levels for years. That business relationship expanded when Stanley closed its Clinton, CT, wire mill. WCJ was qualified as its wire supplier and began supplying Stanley Bostitch customers with WCJ Pilgrim Wire products.

Paul Jacey, Bostitch Industrial Channel Manager, stated, “WCJ Pilgrim Wire has considerable product and industry knowledge in relation to all our customers already, as well as an extensive inventory to serve their needs with little or no lead times. That, plus the fact that WCJ has actually been supplying Stanley Bostitch with our wire for several years points to a seamless transition.”

Step 1. Making Steel Rod

Making steel rod consists of using an electro arc furnace which uses a batch melting process. This produces batches of molten steel known as heats. The first step is to prepare buckets of scrap according to the needs of making C1006 rod. These are added to a charged furnace to insure there is a proper melt-in chemistry. The scrap must be layered in the bucket according to size and density to help with the formation of a liquid pool of steel. Once the liquid is at temperature it is poured into continuous casting billets. These billets are allowed to solidify and then are brought to a rolling mill. They are reduced to a rod the size of a pencil and then wound into large coils. This rod is now ready for the wire mill.

WCJ Pilgrim Wire does not use lead in the production of making stitching wire at any stage!!! We are CPSIA compliant and are currently working with the CPSC to get our wire exempt from testing requirements. Some wire manufacturers still use a lead bath process for making their wire. This process uses the lead itself in the cooling before galvanizing. We use an air method that doesn't not use lead. It is very interesting to find out who the mills are that are still using the lead bath process. Make sure you know that your wire is CPSIA compliant. Make sure to ask for there certification.
